An exceptional masterpiece in the finest Constantinian style
Lot 2318
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 20 mm, 3.46 g, 12 h), Siscia, 328-329. CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG Rosette and laurel-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDENTIAE AVGG / BSIS(double crescent) Camp-gate with two turrets and an open archway; above, star. RIC 215. An exceptional masterpiece in the finest Constantinian style. Boldly struck from fresh dies and with incredible details. Good extremely fine.

Given the abundance of Constantine’s Campgate follis coins, it is very rare for individual pieces to stand out. Yet, this specimen is truly exceptional: the magnificently rendered portrait, with its meticulously combed hair and richly adorned diadem, represents some of the finest iconography from the Constantinian era. The extraordinarily detailed camp gate on the reverse also far surpasses the often hastily crafted mass products of other issues. Undoubtedly, this piece is the work of a master engraver - perhaps even a prototype for the series struck from a master die pair.
